[11/07/11] Young Scientists L3 - #108 & #109

Hi readers ,

As I have mentioned in my earlier post about Wildlife Wonders , I described that magazine as an educational one . I also have to mention to you about Young Scientists , also another must-buy magazine .

I received my copy of the Young Scientists which I also have subscribed to in the school . To give you a brief description of what it is about ...
Blockquote
Okay , well , this magazine comprises of three different levels : Level One , level Two and Level Three . Level One is more for the P1s and P2s . Level Two is for the P3s and P4s . Level Three is for the P5s and P6s .

Here is more information on Level One Magazines :
Introduction series for 6-8 years old. Expose your child to Science and Technology, basic concepts of science through lively stories. Children are curious when they enter PRIMARY ONE and it is the best time to start now!

Level Two :
The comic strip format is a good way of communicating more science concepts to children. Sea Life, World of Physics, Our Wonderful Earth, easy science experiments & science project ideas and instructions. Cool, fun and they really work!

Level Three :

Science Concepts for 9-12 year olds. Definitions and principles are thoroughly and clearly explained. Mammal's World, Invention and Discovery, Daily Science and more.

It is basically a Science comic magazine for Primary students . It is best if you start in Primary One . If you would like to view a sample , you can download the samples for any of the levels here . For subscription , you may want to call English Corner Publishing Pte Ltd at Tel : (65) 622 55 770 or by fax : (65) 637 70 890 . For other further details : you may want to visit the website : www.englishcorner.sg www.youngscientists.sg

They also sell other educational magazines for different subjects such as the Math Mania magazine for Mathematics enrichment .

Okay , so back to the latest issues I have received . Actually , this Science magazine is for further knowledge and enrichment . But issue 109 , on the section of Zoom In , has the a topic on the Butterfly Fish and the article states its adaptations . I will share with you some of them .

Structural adaptation :

Butterfly fish have beautiful colours on their body to help them hide form their enemies in the corals . Besides , the butterfly fish can also change its colours and patterns to match the surrounding environment .

From what my teacher said , the adaptations topic is commonly tested in the PSLE . Well , I don't know if it was just to scare us into studying further but let's just be in the safe side .

Okay , so with that , I end my post . But do remember this helpful magazine and be sure to check out their websites for other stuff other than magazines , such as educational books and games !

Thanks for reading ,

Nadiana

[10/07/11] Wildlife Wonders Volume 30

Hi readers ,

A few days ago , I received my Wildlife Wonders magazine which I ordered in my school (more information about this can be found at the end of this post) .
Volume 30 of Wildlife Wonders is very useful if you want to learn more extra information on Adaptations (a P6 Topic on Science) .

On the main article of this volume , which is about birds . You can find interesting information about these group of animals through the 'King of The Skies' Show section (more information about this can also be found at the end of this post) like the white-bellied sea eagles .
The white-bellied sea eagles are fish hunters that have little bumps called spicules on the undersides of their feet for grasping slippery fish . This is most probably a structural adaptation ? :)

Other than birds , on the 'Friendly Faces of The Ocean' section , extra information on the dugong's structural adaptation .
The dugong eats about 30kg of food per day . Its dense skeleton keeps it submerged while feeding . It has a downturned and flexible snout with horny pads , adapted for grazing and uprooting seagrasses .

So , I am completely satisfied with this volume . However , other volumes are also very useful for general knowledge .
I also hope this information is useful :)

So , if you want to grab this magazine or subscribe to Wildlife Wonders , you can subscribe through your/your child's school as I get mine through my school . My school hold subscriptions for this magazine every year . You can buy past issues , just go to this website : http://education.wrs.com.sg/publications.html or you can subscribe through the magazine itself (there is a subscription page at the last few pages) .
Although I have no idea how to get the magazine itself (the latest issue I mean) , I don't know whether you could buy it at the Zoo . But I hope you would take in full consideration in subscribing to Wildlife Wonders as I have mentioned earlier that it is extremely helpful .

The 'Kings of The Skies' Show is happening daily at the Fuji Hawk Walk at 10am and 4pm as mentioned in the 'King of the Skies' Show section :

Come and marvel at these raptors in the all new 'Kings of The Skies' Show , happening daily at the Fuji Hawk Walk at 10am and 4pm . And be amazed at how these magnificent birds of prey would hunt , not for themselves , but for the falconers whom they have chosen to trust .

I think that it is a very educational show . Make sure to catch it :)

And so , I end my post . Thank you readers .
Farewell ,
Nadiana

Credits goes to Wildlife Wonders . Thanks for this awesome magazine ;)
